Fixes and Features

Since we announced the closure of Yahoo! 360, some of you have had a few questions, and, some of you have run into a few bugs. Here’s a quick update on some of the issues.

Fixes

When I try to post blog entries on my profile I see weird characters or “?” marks throughout the post.

We’ve been able to pinpoint this issue and a fix will be pushed out for this problem on July 8th.

I downloaded my blog entries from the 360 download page but am unable to upload the file to WordPress because its too large. How do I fix this?

WordPress has adjusted their upload size to accommodate large blog uploads (they now support blog uploads up to 700mb). However, if your blog is larger than this, or, you’re still having trouble uploading your 360 entries to WordPress, please contact WordPress’ customer care team using this link: http://support.wordpress.com/contact/. The team over at WordPress will ask you for your blog file and information regarding your WordPress account. Once you send them this info you shouldn’t have any problem accessing your blog entries on WordPress.

I tried to migrate from 360 to profiles but keep seeing the error “You do not have a verified email address,” but I do. How do I fix this?
This issue has been resolved and the fix has been pushed out. If you’re still having trouble please contact Customer Care directly and let them know.

I see people in my “connections” that I don’t remember connecting with. What’s up?

If you’re seeing people you don’t remember connecting with or if you feel as though your profile has been compromised (your content has changed without you changing it, etc.) please be sure to visit this help page which will outline what you should do if your account has been changed without your permission.

To remove a connection, click on the “Contacts” tab in your profile (1) and then select “All Connections” from the dropdown. (2) From here, select the connection you’d like to remove. Then, in the contact’s details, next to “Connection” click “Remove.” (3)

Quick Tip: When viewing a list of “All Contacts,” you’ll notice that Connections have a blue “people peg” to the right of their name.

Known Issues

For a list of known issues, please be sure to visit the profiles Help Pages “Known Issues” section, found here: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/profiles/cctop10/index.html

Features

I don’t receive an email when someone comments on my Guestbook or my blog entries in my profile. Without this how can I tell someone wrote me?

Don’t worry-this can be remedied! To fix this, go to: http://profiles.yahoo.com/settings/notifications and set your notifications setting to “Notify me when actions related to my profile occur.” This will ensure that notices are sent to your primary email address whenever something happens. (Not sure what your primary email address is? Log into your account info page and check the section called “Email Information”– here, you’ll be able  to see which address is marked as your primary email address).

Exception: A few BT Internet users have reported that they’re still not receiving notifications even after opting in. The team is currently investigating this issue and I’ll keep you posted once we know more.

UPDATE: This issue has been resolved for BT users.

In 360 I could assign my contacts categories, allowing me to “file away” my friends and family members appropriately. How do I do this within profiles?

To do this, click on the “Contacts” tab (1) and select a contact (2). When their information appears in the right pane click “Add” next to the “Categories” option. This will prompt a pop-out window that allows you to create your own categories for your contacts and connections. When you’re through, click “Done.” (3)

Not all of my blog content was migrated over from 360 to profiles-what’s the deal?

If your profile or blog (or any entries) were marked as “Mature” or “Adult” this content will not be migrated over into profiles. Profiles does not support or allow mature or adult content. If you’d like to keep your content you may download your entries. If you’re looking to share adult or mature content across Yahoo! you’re welcome to start a Yahoo! Group and publish your entries there as Groups does allow adult content.

If you don’t have any mature content or adult content within your profile or blog, please contact the Customer Care team to report the issue.

If you’re seeing an issue not listed here or on the help pages, please report the issue to Customer Care or to myself (if you haven’t done so already), and I’ll ensure that the issue is reported (if it hasn’t been already).

With your permission, can we access your account and check? (Shoot me an email if you can with the names/contacts that are producing this error so the team can try to replicate).

Melissa – I am now receiving notifications when blog comments appear, or for Guestbook comments. I think this is now fixed, and I’m a BT Yahoo user. Although you might need to add ‘profiles at yahoo-inc.com’ to your “trusted senders” list in email – it occasionally is treated as Spam.

Could you look into the aspect ratio of the image shown when posting blog comments, or when sending a private message. On the front profiles page the Avatar/image I show looks fine, but elsewhere is looks stretched horizontally. It’s true … the internet adds 10 lbs to you.

Giao Hoang,
Whether you remove the entries marked as mature or have changed your settings, this information is retained in the system and cannot be changed. (This is this way so that users cannot pass on adult content by pretending it’s not mature).

This is why your content is not migraitng over.

File under “Do the right thing, get scr ewed anyway.”

Really, Melissa, why not allow the migration of material that’s been UN-marked Adult, then delete it if found to be “objectionable”? Isn’t that what the Abuse links are for? I’m sure there’s no shortage of Users on the lookout for violations, real or imagined. Reporting people is what some of them live for.

If you marked blog settings to mature…it defaulted everything you blogged about to mature…sorry :(

Publish Mature Content on My Blog What’s this?

If you click the checkbox, your future blog entries will be marked “mature content” and will be viewable only to people who want to view mature content.

Remember that setting? Of course, people who want to view mature content are supposed to be adults. Go figure!

It’s amazing that one of the most irritating things about 360 was that apostrophes never posted correctly in comments. Guess what? They don’t work in Guestbook in profiles either. Come on … how hard is it to get this right? I hope you are suitably embarrassed, but fear you’re not.

To provide some context, this was done to cut out some of the embedded HTML code that is common (and was abused early on by spammers)– we’re actively working on a sustainable solution.

Yeah, Frank, I think they will be.

To me it’s obvious that Yahoo is trying to be another Facebook/Twitter site. After all, Yahoo! has been around since the dawn of Internet Time (well, nearly) and it must stick in their craw that they didn’t think of FB or Twitter. But it seems while they have a desire to share the profits of those other creator’s ideas … they don’t seem to have the know-how to pull it off. For me, Yahoo’s 360 was the only part of Yahoo that I totally loved. Yahoo screws up most that they touch … like when they buy another site (i.e.: Geocities) and now it seems they have screwed themselves over with this new blog/personal space site.

And what’s this with Yahoo! asking us (the UNpaid) to tell them how it should work? They had 360.yahoo … it worked. Why did they even change it?

As a heads up, the profiles team works on a monthly release cycle– so new features should come (though they may be minor ones) every month. As with all large companies with literally hundreds of millions of users, there’s always a lot of backend work that falls into these dev cycles. Since we were in between dev cycles, I opted to share features that related to user questions rather than talking about no new features/options.

Melissa, You still didn’t answer the question. I understand that this sort of thing can take months and months to build on, but what we were hoping for was some sort of list of up and coming features, minor or otherwise, and a ballpark date of release. Here’s a direct question, to give you an example of what we are hoping for…Will we be able to change the colors, change the backgrounds with pics of our choice, change the font and font color, simular to how we did it on 360? Is this one of the features that is in the works? If not, let us know that too.

Thanks,
Frank

What about editing the 360 blog content so that it’s no longer mature? Oh, yeah … doesn’t matter because you cannot switch back after you’ve labeled it mature. So that just screws you over when trying to keep your entries in order. My blog is a story done in chapters. I have 4 or 5 mature chapters out of 100+. I could easily edit them so that they were no longer mature but since I cannot remove the mature flag, I’m screwed.

I’m not happy with this new blog/site at all.

I used “mature content” in its loosest definition. Basically i’m gay and i didn’t want any accusations of scaring the horses. So I used it to prevent any under 18s viewing my content. My content was not porn. However, i am adult and i don’t believe every conversation an adult has is appropriate to young ears. I think it’s a total dumbing down of the service if i can’t have an adult conversation in my profile for fear that some child could read it. Do they really need to know that Santa Claus is their dad. Children should be allowed to be children. To push any adult conversation to groups is segregation and discrimination. Shame on you yahoo. 360 was the best site i’ve used for the way it managed permissions. The ability to omit under 18s was one aspect of that. The other was the clear and easy way of seeing the page as others would view it. This clear tool is not found elsewhere and doesn’t appear to be obvious on the new profile.

All told the new profile is rubbish. If it’s took 2 years why is there no functionality. Where are the themes? Why no photos other than the profile shot? Can not see myself using it. I’ve been back on-line for 6 months and haven’t been using 360 as it appeared to have died but even that was difficult to confirm.

Finally, why does my ‘closure’ email switch to Vietnamese for a paragraph in the middle of the message and as a postscript give a link to learn Vietnamese?

I agree with your views on Yahoo removing adult content or “mature” as they call it from the profile. I used it myself…but actually resorted to blocking my entire 360 from public view (for shame…had some wonderful poetry and stories too) due to overzealous fanatics that keep getting me TOS’d for the use of sensual pictures and a few cuss words here and there.

When I say sensual…I do mean clothed sensually…not naked. Still they found it offensive (oh lawdy mama…lookie there..I can see a nipple through that swimsuit!!! call the yahoo police honey!) Sheesh..if it offended you, why the hell are you looking at something marked “mature”???? Hmmmm????

Anyway…I resigned myself to just blogging once in a while about things happening in my life, my poetry and stories will be saved somewhere else for now. My life is too short to go crazy over this little stuff.

OK so this Vietnamese thing is really bugging me.

i’m on http://uk.download.360.yahoo.com/

mid way down is a dark mid blue panel. Inside to the left is:

“Start blogging on your new profile on Yahoo!

Easily move your 360° posts to your profile.
Our new rich-text editor allows you to add photos and video.
Share your posts with the new automatic-send feature. ETC.”

While to the right of this is:

“Chuyển bài viết của bạn sang Yahoo! 360plus

Nếu bạn yêu thích viết blog và kết nối với bạn bè qua những trang blog tiếng Việt, hãy chuyển toàn bộ bài viết và bình luận của mình sang Yahoo! 360plus.

Chuyển bài viết của tôi về 360plus”

Is this what everyone is seeing?

Why on Yahoo UK + Ireland is there a need for Vietnamese?

Comment by Mike
MyAvatars 0.2

…because, in a bizarre move, Yahoo is continuing to support and improve 360 for its Vietnamese customers. Yes – I know it sounds odd, and makes no sense, business or common. But, Yahoo always like to surprise (or is that, disappoint?)

And, yes, given that Yahoo knows you are a uk user, how hard was it to send one mail to Vietnamese users, and a different one to others?

About as difficult as writing a working blog import function; making private messages work; supporting multi-photos, customised backgrounds, decent permissions, supporting apostrophes(!), handling text correctly in blog entries, … but you have to be fair to Yahoo. This is all ground-breaking stuff, and never been done successfully by anyone ever before.

It’s not cheaper if it takes many re-works to get right. Right first time is best.

While we could have sent specific emails to the VN users and the non VN users, we opted not to as there was a lot of overlap– there were quiet a few users in the UK, US, etc. who speak Vietnamese and use 360– since 360 plus was kept, we opted to include the Vietnamese copy in all communication. That way, if it applies to you, you’re aware of the solution. If not? Just ignore it.

I now have a very serious problem and I think it is profile related.

I have a seperate email/set of Aliases I had been using for role play, and most of which (including the one the email was under) were adult themed. Now it seems I am totally unable to log on to this particular account with messenger anymore. I have tried my normal email and it works fine, friends have tried their accounts on my computer and they work fine. I cleaned up the massive amount of clutter in my friends list (almost five hundred) in the hopes that it was the problem, again nothing.

Melissa I can’t even log on to my account to retrieve my archives, and I am having trouble finding them on my computer. I would like to think that this is simply some glitch with my system but eight separate diagnostics and attempts at disk-repair have shown that It probably is not the case. If this is truely a problem on my end I am sorry, but if people are getting their primary screen names blocked or the like for adult themed account names I think they should have the option to change things around somehow.

However for now I will give the benefit of the doubt and assume that it is a problem on my end, one for which I would like to ask the fix. I can say that before the problem started I shut down my computer by holding the power button rather than using a regular shut down due to an urgent personal matter. I do not know if this somehow caused a corrupt file that won’t allow messenger to start, but it seems the only likely cause to this effect on my end. Thank you in advance for any help, and I do hope this is not the start of worse things on the horizen.

I found out the problem was in fact with my computer, so I am sorry if I came off as a bit harsh. However I hope you can also understand now the kind of fear and confusion and mistrust this transition has harbored. People are losing features they want, losing content they have put up, and indeed are starting to lose faith that they will be able to stay in contact with people because it will be taken away simply so that Yahoo can implement this new direction that none of us really wanted. Please try to understand Melissa your users are still very unhappy, and nothing has been shown to make it better. Most of us live in fear of what will be done next. It’s not a good environment for revisions and changes.

Please add the option to “keep” your About Me profile information expanded or collapsed. I prefer mine all to show as opposed to the default collapsed version and would like it to ALWAYS show everything.

This is on the roadmap but unfortunately, I don’t have a timeline for you as to when you’ll see this feature implemented.

It’s been a month since the official announcement of closing down yahoo 360, but no more features have been added.

Almost friends of mine have moved to facebook. There is also a facebook application that can help you to migrate your 360 entries and comment to facebook.

I want to keep them with my Y! profile connections, but I can’t since Y! profile is so simple. Now it seems like I should move to facebook with them.

Yahoo is losing users, who have been with them for years.

Not one single comment yet? I think it should be apparent by now that your new profile system is a complete failure. I don’t have one good thing to say about it. MyBlogLog seems to do everything that the new profile system does…except MyBlogLog does it better. The only thing that MyBlogLog doesn’t offer is a blog and the new profile blog feature doesn’t even offer a spell checker that last time I checked.

If Yahoo was getting out of the social networking game, you could have just been straight with us from the beginning. I’ve lost most of my 360 friends because Yahoo failed to fulfill the promise that our 360 friends would be transitioned to the new profile system.

This could have been a great product. Instead, we have a mediocre profile that doesn’t even measure up to other products.

As my final 360 blast says, “So long, and thanks for all the fish.”

That photo uploading doesn’t work. I’ve uploaded a file to picasa (I hate Flickr) and everytime I inserted the url, it disappeared. I don’t understand why you have to upload a photo elsewhere on the web and then link to it instead of just being able to upload straight to the blog entry. It makes no sense. Yahoo’s created an extra step. I’m not bothering with the blog on Yahoo profiles anymore. I couldn’t transport my entries, can’t upload an image straight to the blog, and probably will get a nasty note if I say a naughty word. It isn’t worth it, to be honest. I’ll keep the profile, but that’s it. I hope everyone moves to Wordpress or Blogger. This is ridiculous.

None of this is directed at you, Melissa. You’re the one on the front lines trying to deal with upset users and I respect that. But your bosses have no clue as to what they’re doing. The profile still has bugs and why shut down 360 at all?

The URL that Picasaweb gives under ‘Link to this photo’ does not work for putting pictures into blogs. To get the right URL, proceed as follows.

In Firefox:
Right click the image, and then left click ‘Copy Image Location’.

In Internet Explorer:
Right click the image.
Left click ‘Properties’.
In the dialog box which appears, select the URL given.
Right click the selection.
On the menu which appears, left click ‘Copy’.
Left click ‘Cancel’.

You now have the URL on your clipboard and can paste it into the dialog box.

If this remedy doesn’t work for you, you are not alone. The Blogger Forum has been inundated recently with problems about uploading pictures to blogs from Picasaweb.

Hi Melissa,

What happened to all the comments? Another problem for Yahoo?

Another thing to think about. Updates does not tell us when our connections have posted a blog and I would have thought that this was a very basic requirement. I don’t want or need to know when they connect to someone or when they comment on someones guestbook but I would like to know when the post a blog.

Please Melissa will some one at Yahoo do something about Customer Care? All we get when we ask them a question is a copy and paste reply that often has nothing to do with the question we ask.

This transfer must be a huge can-o-worms. Hope you can keep on top of things.

You should advertise “mybloglog” on the “add more” page of the profile. In it’s current format it took me a long time to see how to add my external blog feed. If I didn’t see some one else use it I would have no idea. I really forgot about the bloglog service. (shame on me lol)

A bit more description of the yahoo services seems like a good way to spice up the profile pages.

Another thing,

I tried to save a geocities page to my disk, it worked but the site now gives an error message. Probably because my IP is linked to the backup. I don’t think the author is still alive, I’d hate to see his pages disappear. I only saved 1 page – haha, perhaps the error could be a bit less aggressive during the shut-down. The site is available now. It was only down for a few minutes.

Idea,

I think you should contact archive.org and have them host geocities for you. I mean, the ad-server should continue to work? It would be a waste of clicks and impressions. :-) Times are already so complicated.

We are really entering the internet dark age. Google’s usenet archive crawler lost all old postings. There isn’t much interesting stuff left for me online without geocities, yahoo 360 and usenet.

So I’m archiving like crazy, I bet I work much harder than you (haha) But that is just to say I understand the complexity of your assignment.

Another idea,

I really do miss a link on the 360 profile pointing at the new one. I don’t know if you have the time to implement that but it seems worth it.

Good luck,

PS
It’s been fun on 360, I don’t regret using the service at all.

I thought some big new features update was due today, the 8th? The day is over on the east coast, half an hour away from being over central time and the better part of being over west coast… hello? I’ve been TRYING to use my new profile, get used to it and like it but 1) there are way too many bugs for this to be released as is. It’s like it’s a half finished product. I can’t believe Yahoo did that. I’ve been using that Feedback link like crazy man to report issues and bugs. And 2) I can’t get any of my friends to join me, they’re jumping ship fast. I say shut it down and give it up even if you still have to close 360. This product is going nowhere and it’s pretty clear to all. Seems a waste of time, productivity, resources and money. Too bad. I do believe Yahoo has seen it’s better days. Google wins.

LoL !!! OMG THOSE are the updates we’ve been waiting for? The insane weird characters are gone from our blogs that were just a default font issue on yahoo’s part, [i've done lots of mozilla research on that one!] an invite text area, and a share websites module [that was already in our settings to begin with] are the only additions and/or fixes for this update? Are you kidding me? That’s all your engineers could do? How long are their lunch hours? Gah! I’m shocked.

My main concern, with less than one week of 360 left is that SEARCH DOES NOT WORK. So the contacts I have on 360, who did not reveal their email address on 360, so are in my contacts list, but I can’t invite them to Profiles from there, will be lost to me when 360 disappears.

I have not found *anyone* using the find facility. Not myself, via name or ID or mail address, nor anyone who I am currently connected to whose details I also know. Either 6 wrong hits, or 16,000 hits, and no way of searching through those (limit of 10 a page is useless – add ’show all’).

So in a week, the new ‘connecting’ tool from Yahoo loses me 60% of my connections. Cool.

Mike,
Search returns results for people who wish to be found (have enabled the search feature). Search pulls results from exact matches for email, nickname, and first/last name.

Your 360 connections should show up as “suggested connections” within your profile, allowing you to connect with them easily. Also, be sure to check that they’re not also in your address book– http://profiles.yahoo.com/contacts/

Yes, I know this. I wish to be found. I have my profiles set to searchable. They cannot be found using email, nickname, and first/last name. Search simply does not work (I say again). Show me a working example.

I cannot connect with 360 people who did not provide an email address – ‘One or more of the selected contacts is a connection or does not have an email or Y!Messenger ID. These contacts will not receive an invitation.’ – which as I’ve mentioned before is rubbish. They clearly *do* have an email address as we met on 360.

Profiles fails in its primary function. It doesn’t let people connect.
Search doesn’t work. It just doesn’t. Show me it finding someone.

I hope everyone stops using Yahoo in 3 days’ time. Then you might consider caring for your customers.

I have a couple friends that have moved modules into impossible positions on top of each other and cannot get them disentangled. I advised them to contact Help and they have received no help. One friend ended up reloading Profiles. I have searched and found how to reload mail but not how to reload Profiles.

The longer we already here wait to get help on issues the more people give up and leave. Is help going to be more responsive on this new platform or not?

Hello Melissa,

I would love to migrate my 360 blog to Profile. I went to the page http://download.360.yahoo.com/ and already pressed the button “Move my blog” but nothing has been there yet, though a couple days had passed. Can you please help me move the content there before 360 got completely deleted? Thank you.

Here is the link to my 360: http://360.yahoo.com/profile-QrvNytM5cqGOi7.4z4Ro1bGnf8gL . I am one of the top bloggers in Vietnam. :)

Hi Robbey,

It is very likely that your blogs are currently marked as adults/mature content and as a result, they will not be transferred to your profile, even if you try to unmark the mature content option. You can download them though and upload them to your wordpress blog, for instance, if you want to. In case you are sure that none of your blogs is marked as mature content, you can email Melissa at yahooprofiles@yahoo-inc.com. She will have a look at it and find a solution to migrate your blog to your profile.

Hope it helps.

I have used profile search for finding new friends for my yahoo profile page. at the begining it works well but after surfing more search pages like after 100 pages you will face the problem number 999 and the search do not work for a long time .sometimes i cant do anymore search for 1 days . by the way the solutions you offered at the error 999 page is not working for me i think the problem is something else. I think this is good idea that you offer search with more accessibilities like searching for users with profile picture and so on.(advanced search)
thanks and waiting for your reply.

I cannot access my profile. Whenever I try to get on, instead of taking me to my profile, it says “Sorry, this profile cannot be retrieved at the moment. Please try again.”
‘try again’ takes me to a page where i can log in, but when i log in, the same thing happens.
I don’t know why I can’t access it. Please help!
thanks!
