Update: Your profile on Yahoo! Answers

Following last week’s announcement (both here and on the Answers blog), the transition to the new Yahoo! Profiles is now taking place on Answers. If you’re a regular user of Yahoo! Answers you’ll start to notice a change in your profile options.

From now on, instead of importing your image display from Yahoo! 360, Answers will use the image from your profile on Yahoo!. For those of you who display an Avatar on Answers – don’t worry. This won’t change. Both Avatars and nicknames will continue to remain the same on Answers.

If you haven’t already activated your profile, you can do so by going to http://profiles.yahoo.com — here, you’ll be asked to verify some information that you’ve previously shared with Yahoo!, and to select the image you’d like to share with the Answers community.

For those of you who are visiting the profiles news blog for the first time– welcome! Please feel free to poke around and review the archives for relevant topics and questions that might improve your experience with your new profile on Yahoo!. As the Community Manager, I try to answer and address as many user questions as I possibly can, so feel free to leave a comment or a question and I’ll do my best to help out.

Still can’t find what you’re looking for? Be sure to check out the FAQ’s and help guides set up by Customer Care (you can find them here) which will cover issues like “Why is my profile not viewable when I use my profile URL?” “What happened to the profile for my Alias?” and, “How do I hide my profile?

Don’t have a question, but instead have a suggestion? Leave it as a comment! We love hearing your feedback and actively work to implement your feedback in the product.

Thanks, and enjoy your new profile!

So when do we get a blog?

Hi Carl,
As you know, there’s currently not a blogging solution built into profiles (but you can use third party sites like blogger to pull in your blog if you want) but we are currently exploring blogging features/functionality. At this time we’re exploring more options for blogging, based off of user feedback.

I’ll try to see if I can’t provide more information than that, but as it stands, I can’t provide any firm dates/information for you. Sorry.

Answer me this Melissa…what is Yahoo’s vision for the new profile system beyond the vague notion unifying all of Yahoo’s systems into one profile system. What reason should we come to our profiles versus other Yahoo properties or other services?

With 360, I at least had a destination for my social contacts on Yahoo. With this profile thing, my contacts did not import easily at all has had been promised. We had been promised early on that our friends list would remained in tact along with our blogs and blog comments. Neither of those things happened. Instead, we had to reinvite our friends to connect and still no blog

There are plenty of Yahoo competitors that already do what Yahoo is trying to do with the profile system. MyBlogLog does the who social streaming thing already…and better.

So Melissa, what makes the Yahoo profile system a “must use” product?

Nothing Carl. You won’t get an answer to this because there is no answer. There is no reason to use the Yahoo profile system. It is 5 years too late, and they won’t back off because if they admit they made a mistake, it will drag the company down even faster than it’s going down now.

Melissa,

If there is no blogging ability, and you cant do basic things like change your background pic, then the “Universal Profile” is nothing more then an extremely scaled down version of Yahoo Mash. I actually liked Yahoo Mash when it came out, you could use html codes in the modules, there was game modules, modules for Flickr and Youtube, just about everything you could ask for – except a blog. Needless to say many many people want the ability to blog, thats why sites like Multiply have done so well and sites like Yahoo Mash became a ghost town very quickly.
If you want a social networking system that works, then you should seriously consider revitalizing something more like Yahoo Mash with the ability to blog. And make sure you work out the bugs before you release it to the public, people hate trying something new that dosent work very well.
One last comment, why should we go to a 3rd party site when we should be able to go to one site and have everything we need (oh wait we can do that, just not on Yahoo). Yahoo has kept us waiting and waiting and waiting and now were going to wait longer while Yahoo decides if we should have bloging ability. What happens when Yahoo decides they dont want to add bloging? yet another ghost town and another failed attempt for Yahoo.

House MD,
I agree that yahoo needs to get the 360 situation settled. I call it the 360 situation because for me the problem is not simply that profiles doesn’t have a blog, but that yahoo users, especially 360 folk and mash folk were told a blog was coming. And, it seems like yahoo is still making a decision about that. It would be nice if yahoo 360 had some sort of notice of intent.

Well, we already have our answer…360 is shutting down. What we don’t have an answer on is when or if we’ll be able transition our list of friends and blogs to other services or to the universal profile system.

We already know that the idea of keep our list of 360 friends and porting them over to the new profile was a joke. I lost about 80% of my connections and the ones that did make it don’t even use the profile system. As for the promise to have a blog on the new profile…still waiting on that one and I doubt it will ever happen.

There was a time when I was an enthusiatic user of 360 and looking forward to the new profile system, but it looks like we simply have another failed attempted and social networking by Yahoo.

Melissa,
I have already given my idea for the yahoo profiles, my yahoo, yahoo mail, part of 360 fusion.
BUT, speaking as a lover of yahoo groups.
Maybe the blogging solution is a merger between yahoo profiles and yahoo groups.
you are right, groups allows a better search of content. So, the question is not really, do you have blogs. But, how are the blogs represented.
Essentially, develop an interface for yahoo group messages on profiles.

Okay, here is how it would work
Considering the comments on profiles, you have three types of users:
the 360 folk, the mash folk, the die hard yahoo only folk, the people unsatisfied with other blogging services, and people just starting checking out profiles.

For 360 users, who already have a blog. The first step is to turn their blog into a yahoo group. The blogs are turned into messages. The comments turned into replys to the messages. The favorites and blog roll turned into link folders, with the links in each folder.
Turn the avatar into the group image. All the avatar images will be in a yahoo groups image folder.
The blast can be the group statement.
And, the security settings of the group match the 360 blog. so, if you had a public 360 blog, then the messages are public as well as comments, and the same goes for private.
If the 360 blog is public but didn’t allow messages , you can set the group settings for moderator reply only, and etc. concerning the security settings.
For the friends list, add them as members of the group.

Now, at this point, the only thing I have not transferred from 360 is the blast link, the quick comments, the about me, the rss feed, the ratings, the favorites, and testimonials by 360 users.
[yes, of course i missed some things:) but i covered most of it]
These aspects are alright to exclude because you already have a guest book, but to be robust, allow people to add a quick comment message stream in their group if they love their quick comments that much.
The testimonials can be transported to the contacts page of the profiles. As the contacts page will have a category for members of a persons group page.
Favorites and the about me are already in profiles, except for the about me link. You can add the 360 about me link to profiles,
The blast link can be added to your profile page.
The rss and ratings can be added to the profiles front page OR the blog page of the profiles.

NOW, that I have covered most of the 360 elements being turned into parts of peoples specific groups.
The interface, essentially, what is yahoo groups weakness in terms of social networking. It has a great standard interface. most people who use groups like groups consistency of use. It works well in the emails. People can see in respond in yahoo’s most popular product.
The weakness of groups is that users think of yahoo groups as for collectives only. If you make an extra page in the yahoo profiles set that is used specifically for a users personal group, as described above. Then users have their blog and you don’t have to think up a whole new service. To handle the kinds of tags that groups doesn’t handle, in the editor, set it up where unallowed code in emails and in groups is given special tags which will work from the profile blog pages. Thus, you maintain, the consistency of group messages in email and in the group pages but also allow people to do like they do on other blog services.
So, the blog page is attached directly to a yahoo group designed to to be interfaced on the yahoo profiles blog page.

For all other members they can just start their blog naturally, or import blogs from other places, and the content will be inputted into a yahoo group. So, all yahoo is really doing , is shifting blog information into groups and allowing users to interface with one group in such a way that is it like other blog services. This helps because with this method, people can blog using their email. Send an email to their “blog group” and it will be visible on the group page or the profiles blog page.
This is probably the best option. yahoo groups already has a design. Outside of developing the interface page for yahoo profiles and the code structure to allow for the different tags in messages and comments. It should be easier.
Who will know the difference between a blog and your personal group if it is interfaced correctly.
oh, I forgot some things, of course:), for these “blog groups” the friends list who are now members will have the group settings where they can not get email messages from the group, originally. But, should be allowed to change the settings later.

Well, that is the rough and poorly sketched idea.
As a 360 user, if you allow me to transfer my yahoo 360 into a yahoo group but give me an interface like 360’s to post blogs, to it, and have a place for commentary like 360 and other blog places. That should be simpler, and it doesn’t require groups to really change. Another security layer will be needed for groups. for the interface page on profiles. And, the html tag system will need to exists but , groups doesn’t need to be touched functionally, to any great degree in my opinion

the blog page can be similar to the 360 blog page.
remember the key is simply taking information from a group and presenting it in a way that mirrors a blog. so, a user will have a yahoo “blog group”, an interface on profiles for themselves and others to view, add, delete, and edit, as the users security settings allow, to the users “blog group”

Hi MK,
Wow, what a comment– this is great. I’m right along with you in thinking that allowing someone to subscribe to your content is more valuable than a basic blog– and Groups does already have a similar model (though the interface isn’t exactly what users would want right now!:) )

Thanks!

My pleasure Melissa,
just remember, like yahoo mail classic and the new yahoo mail, allow for the current yahoo groups interface, perhaps yahoo groups classic, with any serious up to date interface. I would say mimick that for all yahoo products. not all users are young or as able, sometimes the simple interface is better for them.

if profiles could not allow messages to be sent to connections, then you could be on profiles and we could connect:) ha!

P.S.
I know this isn’t your department but could you tell the yahoo mail people to give the new yahoo mail a good name. I use yahoo mail classic. but when i have to refer to the advanced version as the new yahoo mail. Perhaps, yahoo mail advanced.

tomorrow spring starts, i hope you get to take a few moments with nature.

for yahoo mail classic, after the notepad tab, it would be cool if the yahoo mail people could put three buttons representing the three pages of yahoo profiles. When they are clicked they open up a new page to profiles.
I know you guys have the drop down list ,but i think profiles should be more visible considering yahoo is such a prime product. Secondly, yahoo mail users have a routine with their mail, so get exposure new things must be as visible as possible. You can leave account info up at the top right but the profile link, and contacts link need to be put after notepad as well as a link for the updates. Just three text links should not be hard or to radical to implement.

for my yahoo , the same idea.after the new tab button OR the last possible tab, there is space on the tab line for the same three links like on yahoo mail. just three links that open up new pages. you make profiles so unnoticed in yahoo mail and my yahoo, as well as the yahoo frontpage

make them more noticeable, at least the profiles team, if they decide it feasible, can petition the yahoo mail and my yahoo teams

Thanks for the comment Melissa,

Like I have said several times before, most of your 360 users would be alot happier if Yahoo would just fix some of the BASIC FUNCTION problems of 360. If 360 was up and running normally, then you could take all the time in the world to devolpe what ever profile system you wanted. 360 users have been in the dark with a broken down system for along time, and you have lost ALOT of users because of it.

Its almost like saying Yahoo has spent all of its time building a new cart, FAILING to realize the horse has a broken leg! fix the horse then build your fancy cart otherwise your never going to make it to market.

As for the rest of Yahoo, well I have only used Answers a few times, and I stopped going to my groups because they stopped showing up on my 360 page so I cant really comment on anyother part of Yahoo. But from my 360 expierence, if you start changing other stuff around without making the basics work then you will probally continue to loose users.
Please let us know something about 360 soon,
Thank you once again.

P.S. Heres a great idea for you! You and your team should read the blog comments on the 360 news page ( I believe the last one was in October last year) read them and you will see exactly what i’m talking about.

House,
what about a yahoo 360 classic and a yahoo 360 profiles. Like yahoo mail classic and the new yahoo mail.
allow people to have one or the other. but not able to switch between them, like the mail versions.
One time switch from classic to profiles 360.
yahoo definitely wants to do something more concerning blogging but 360 will still exists, so maybe the same approach

Well MK it would be nice to just get 360 to work, then worry about a classic / new. And why couldent we switch between both? we can switch mail so why not profiles. I switched back and forth several times before I decided on which mail version I like better. If you force someone to do something without giving them the “try it before you buy it” oppertunity then people wont go for it.
As for the blogging, well 360 already has a blogging ability so whats the problem? oh I remember, it dosent work most of the time.
Like I said before, no sense in building a new cart when your horse has a broken leg.

Truly, some step-by-step instructions via a blog entry, help page, tutorial page or video would be more helpful than these announcements. Please provide a clear explanation of how someone (who does or doesn’t have a 360 space nor Yahoo! Profile activated) can get an image to show on Yahoo! Answers that’s not a Yahoo! Avatar.

For example, the settings in the Y/A profile still say “Yahoo! 360″. That’s confusing. Also, it’s not clear whether someone should choose the 360 picture setting in their Y/A profile at all.

Thanks!

I see that more Yahoo! Answers profiles are converting now. It would be good if Yahoo! could more explicitly state that people have to wait until their Y/A profile settings are completely changed over to actually click the image option.

I think it’s a great thing that Yahoo has blogs like this to update its users on these types of things! I was never really a Yahoo user until recently. I always used MSN over Yahoo, but I’ve come to realize that Yahoo seems to be better. Not only does Yahoo enjoy getting user feedback and try to improve on their products based off of what users would like,Yahoo also seems to appreciate its users (like keeping the old profiles so that users may get information off of it). From all of my experiences on MSN,I’ve come to realize that they don’t care at all about their users. I,along with others that I know, have had so many problems with them.

I’ve already given some of my feedback, but the most wanted things I can think of for me would be to be able to see when people update their profiles at profiles.yahoo.com (which includes when they upload a new pic) and also having the ability to customize your profile more by adding backgrounds and things.

Also I wrote you an email asking about a few things on Yahoo Profiles and the Avatars (although I don’t know if you can answer my questions on the Avatars. I haven’t found anyone that can. It’s just questions about when certain features were added.) I was hoping you could email me back sometime, but I understand if you are very busy!

Announcements should be more useful when it comes to site changes. I’m a long-time user. I think implementation of changes would go smoother if Yahoo was clearer about how they plan to do things and what certain users should do. In the case of Yahoo! Answers images, many users are in a “limbo” state where they can’t check options in their Y/A settings (as instructed).

Concerning blogs and a dedicated plateform. I’m not sure what to think. I would believe the trend is slow in favor of aggregated content posted in socialstream like Facebook, Yahoo Profile and co

For this very reason, i was looking forward to integrate my yahoo profile stream right within a web with a personal domain page or as a widget . Something similar to what Frienfeed provides. Do you think this is part of the Open Strategy?

Also I was wondering how Yahoo! profile will play on the long term side by side to MyBlogLog. aren’t the two services redundant in some way. Please no peanut butter!

Melissa, what you need to understand is that 1531 people (New Yahoo! Profile Rolling Out Today) have made comments on the Yahoo 360 help site and NO ONE is responding. It’s as if everything is going into a black hole, or maybe no one cares to read what your customers are saying about the terrible customer service we are receiving. Yahoo has lost hundreds of faithful followers because of the way they are being treated. I have never seen such horrible service …or should I say lack of service.

I have previously asked for specific help only to receive a form letter telling me that Yahoo is NOT going to fix the problem but if I need help to please let them know. What kind of customer service is that? It’s disgusting, and I suspect that if your paying advertisers were treated this poorly then Yahoo would go under once and for all…which is probably what you need to do based on the way you are treating people.

So, with all this said, why don’t you listen to the 360 people? We want to keep 360 just as it was (when it worked properly). Not everyone chats in Messenger and not everyone wants a new profile. We like being able to differentiate between the two. If we wanted something that looks like Facebook then we would go to Facebook. All we are asking is that your technical support team figures out what is wrong with 360 and fixes it, and that you give us updates at the help site. That’s all.

Hey jobseeker,
Are you trying to comment on an article at http://news.yahoo.com/tech or are you buzzing up the article and commenting on it there? (You could have found the article at http://news.yahoo.com/tech but hit “buzz” and then are taken to the article’s page where you’re able to leave a comment). If you’re commenting on the article at Buzz, the only information that should display is the Display Name that you provide in your profile– this is designed this way to protect user’s information/privacy.

But, if you’re commenting on a blog/post on http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/ unfortunately it looks like they don’t support alias/Display Name functionality just yet (I’m following up with them as soon as I post this comment to see if there’s an ETA on that, etc.) so if that’s the case, then your best bet is to create a separate ID and use that to comment, or, wait and see what I figure out. :)

I agree that People Search should include keywords, interests and certainly location (state, city). I don’t even understand the current search; there’s a single field; is it for yahoo ID, name? If so, this seems of very little value. As for privacy, if someone marks information private (or to be shared only with Connections), then they shouldn’t show up in search results. I still think there are plenty of people who wouldn’t mind providing location and interests information knowing that they are then ’searchable’.
What is the outlook for providing people search capability as the were previously??

When you go to http://profiles.yahoo.com/settings/peoplesearch and are logged in under your don733 ID, do you have the don733 box checked? Is the top box (”Allow people to find my profile by searching for my first name, last name, or display name”) checked?

If not, then that’s why it’s not coming up. If so, then let me know and I’ll have an engineer pull up your profile and look to see if there’s an underlying issue/bug as it should work/is consistent with every other user’s profile.

-Melissa

Hi, I am aware of the change to Profiles that took place over the weekend because I already have a Profiles page. And at the time my page was set on hidden so nobody could view my page, and after the change my Avatar picture disappeared from my Answers profile.

I then changed my settings so it was no longer on the hidden setting, and my picture appeared back on my Answers profile.

But I am wondering if you can help on this issue regarding the new Profiles. Because I feel there is conflicting information from staff regarding the use of Avatars on Answers

Prior to the Profiles change this comment was made my a member of the Y!AT on a post on the Answers Suggestion Board.

“by Yahoo! Answers employee Yahoo! Answers Team | 3 days ago
Hey everyone,
To address the initial question, can we “make the names and avatars on Answers and the Suggestion Board the same” – unfortunately no, for the foreseeable future for technical reasons they will be separate.
Yahoo! Answers team ”
http://suggestions.yahoo.com/detail/?prop=answers&fid=138081

The comment was in regards to the question “Can YAT make the names and avatars on Y/A and SB the same It would help with those who DO have numberous accounts and being able to hide under another account”

This is the part of the Y!AT comment that confuses me.
“unfortunately no, for the foreseeable future for technical reasons they will be separate.”

“They will be separate” but in fact they are not. I have now found that with the new Profiles I cannot make my Avatar picture on the Suggestion Board separate from my Avatar pictures on Answer, unless I use one of the Yahoo cartoon avatar pictures.

So technical I cannot make my Suggestions Board identity different from my Answers identify if I want to use my own picture. And this to me conflicts to the Y!AT statement.

I am wondering if you can offer some clarity on this because at the moment I feel that there are security issues that need to be addressed, regarding identities on Answers and the Suggestions board.

Thank you

Dear Yahoo,

One day you might wander over here and read this letter…or maybe not. Truth be known and just like you, I don’t care.

Your inability to fix this Godforsaken piece of crap is a mystery to me. You have the resources, you have the technical power, yet you have decided to let everything fall by the wayside so you can concentrate on your “new and improved” profile features. The truly sad part of it all is that your subscribers are screaming from the rooftops, “We don’t like the new profiles,” and “We want 360 fixed so we can stay here.” You, Yahoo, in true horrible Yahoo fashion, choose to ignore us.

I wish there was a way to let others outside of 360 know exactly what you are doing to your faithful followers. I wish someone had a contact with the media in Sunnyvale, CA, where you reside, and that someone would run a story for the public about Yahoo and your terrible technical support team, as well as Yahoo having the worst customer service in the world.

Shame on you, Yahoo. You screwed your stockholders when you didn’t sell to Microsoft. You have screwed your Messenger subscribers by forcing them to use a profile system they don’t want. Now you are screwing all 360 members by not fixing problems. You deserve to go out of business.

So, Yahoo, from my point of view, you can take your censorship and your inability to fix technical problems and your lack of true understanding about what your subscribers really want and you can stick it up your sanctimonious hard drive.

All of this is very interesting but my profile has been invisible and unavailable to me for the past five days, displaying a message that reads, ” Sorry, this profile cannot be retrieved at the moment. Please try again. ” on every attempt. I can neither invite, accept invitations or amend the profile. So far, I am underwhelmed with the new Profiles options. Any help for this?

I have a question about the yahoo profiles why not let us jazz up our profiles more like use some html coding and stuff. This could work and definitely people would love this!

I have been with yahoo messenger since I started and have made many friends on your yahoo games site, I play Cards on a regular basis and find that there are so many comments made by ladies of ill repute who are only there to link you to porn sites, they are commonly called “bots” by other users, many of whom also express their dislike of this practice, it would be nice for you yahoo to have administrators on these games pages/tables to eliminate the filth you appear to allow without the concern for your faithfull regular good users, please consider us. Regards from Tony

Hey Melissa, I don’t so much mind the new profiles, but I would still like the option to view the old ones aswell. Not many people are remakeing their profiles and i’d like to see the old ones for refrence. I’ve been talking about it with alot of people and we would all like to be able to see them. If its possible, if there is a way to, please let me know. And if not, could you please allow it to be possible?
