Changes to your profile on Yahoo! Answers

Attention Yahoo! Answers users: in the coming weeks, you might notice a change in the way in which your profile image is displayed within Yahoo! Answers.

http://www.yprofileblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/yamster.png

Currently, the image that displays for each user in Answers is brought in from your 360 profile. In the coming weeks, Answers will start using profiles to display your image rather than 360.

If you’ve already updated your profile on http://profiles.yahoo.com you’re ready to go-the image you use on your profile on Yahoo! will now be the same image that shows up when you answer or ask questions on Yahoo! Answers.

However, if you haven’t updated/activated your profile on Yahoo! you’ll want to do that soon to confirm the display image that will be used whist on Answers. To get started, just go to http://profiles.yahoo.com . Once you’re there, you’ll be asked to confirm some information that you’ve previously shared with Yahoo! and select the image you’d like to share with the Answers community.

For those of you who display an avatar on Answers – don’t worry.  This won’t change.  Both avatars and nicknames will continue to remain the same on Answers.

The Answers team will continue to keep you updated on the change through the Answers blog, and I’ll do my best to communicate those changes here as well.

All of a sudden I am barred from the literati game rooms–no argument with anyone–no notice–no nothing–what is going on?

What if you don’t want your YA profile associated with you 360 profile? Since you won’t let us delete our YA membership/profile, we’re kinda screwed if we used the same e-mail address. I still don’t feel you all are thinking this stuff out very well before doing it…I know corporate pressure may be driving you to push forward a product before its ready, but don’t you at some point have the responsibility to say to them, “STOP, this is harming your image with users?”

Or are you seeing something I’m not?

Floyd,
Your 360 profile was already associated with Answers. This is moving AWAY from that. Instead of using 360 for your profile, this uses, well, your profile. Makes sense, right?

As far as “seeing something” that you’re not, maybe. If you check out the trends, it’s all for aggregation– making all of your sites easier to use, in one place, with one profile. In Yahoo, there are already several profiles for one user, making it incredibly tough to manage information and remember what went where. This makes things a bit easier, by making it all available in one place.

A lot of people use answers so if you will also have finalized adding yahoo answers updates to the profile updates , then good going.

I have checked the change on the Yahoo! Anwers, but the link associated to Profiles uses the main Yahoo! ID or alias (mainyahooid): http://profiles.yahoo.com/mainyahooid and this gives a clue about our Yahoo! Mail address: mainyahooid@yahoo.*
Putting a secondary Yahoo! ID or alias to show a link to our profiles would avoid someone to guess our complete Yahoo! Mail address, but this option it is not available.

Marco,
If you have an alias, all you have to do is link your alias to your core ID. To do this, log into your profile, click on Settings > Search (http://profiles.yahoo.com/settings/peoplesearch) and then check the first box to make your profiles searchable, and then the subsequent boxes to make your aliases searchable as well.

So for example, my email for the profile blog is yprofileblog [at] yahoo [dot] com so the main link to my profile is http://profiles.yahoo.com/yprofileblog

However, I also have the alias of yprofileSblog (capital S only for emphasis :) ) So, if I wanted to mask my core ID (yprofileblog) I could instead share http://profiles.yahoo.com/yprofilesblog with a potential connection without running the risk of revealing my core ID.

Hope this helps.

Again Melissa, this defeats the purpose of an Alias. We want it to be separate, for people to not know its us unless we tell them. It doesn’t look like its might be a core profile, does not have the same information outline as a core profile and THAT is what is important. People should not know for sure if its an Alias profile at all.Its all just poitnlessly confusing and does not work the way its supposed to. Thats why so many of us complain.

Sorry Terra, but contrary to what you are told, Yahoo doesn’t really care what you think. All you get here is lip service.

If they truly cared about how the users felt, they would have rolled back the profile changes, and not released the new profiles to the public until they contained all of the previous functionality (including aliases). They would have then started introducing the new changes from that point forward. This would have kept existing users happy, while accomplishing their misguided open and social changes.

Terra,
You’re missing the point– that’s not what Marco’s comment/question was about. Not everything is about using an alias the way you intended for it to be used– he simply wanted to mask his core ID to reduce spam, which is COMPLETELY possible in this profile system.

I don’t feel the Profiles are good enough yet to link into Answers. I’ve always had problems using an id picture in Answers, and was hoping that this would be rectified when 360 was no longer the source of the pictures.

A few days ago I experimented with adding and removing pictures on the new Profile carousel, and it was working fine. Today it isn’t. When I try to delete, I get two semicircular arrows endlessly chasing each other round.

I also succeeded in getting my picture from MyBlogLog to show on two of my comments (6598 and 6599) in here, provided I entered my URL from MyBlogLog or from 360 as my website.

I had noticed that some people who had pictures showing on here were using gravatars. Subsequently I set up my own gravatar, and it then replaced the MyBlogLog picture on here. Now I have removed my gravatar, the MyBlogLog picture has not been reinstated on the comments where previously it was showing. I suspect there is now no way of getting it back.

Surely it is wrong for a gravatar to override a site-specific picture, especially when the gravatar is set to the default. The help on the gravatar site says that if you remove your gravatars, the result will be exactly the same as if you had no account.

Is this why the “Find” feature on the Profile no longer works? I even put MY Yahoo name in, and it said they never heard of me. They also never heard of any other names I put in which I KNOW have profiles. What’s up with that? worked last month. Since you eliminated the “interests” connections on profiles, of course I cannot find anyone besides people whose Yahoo names I already know, but now I can’t even find their profiles. Yahoo is so wrecked.

Alice,
First make sure that you (and your friends) have your profiles set to “searchable”– to do this, to Settings>Search (http://profiles.yahoo.com/settings/peoplesearch) and check to see if the top box is checked, and any subsequent aliases that you want to make searchable are checked. If they are not, this is why you’re not showing up in search results– it’s not because Yahoo! is “wrecked.”

If they are checked and you’re still not showing up in search results when you search for your first and last name (as you have them entered in your profile) then please do report this to Customer Care so they can open a ticket http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/profiles/forms_index.html

While us Yahoo users appriciate the work Yahoo has tried to do during the past year or so, I would really like to know what is going to be the ultimate fate of Yahoo 360?
I’ve been a dedicated Yahoo 360 user for several years now, but as of late I’ve found myself spending more and more time on other sites. It seems that everytime I log onto 360, its a whole new adventure as to what works and what is now broken. Yes, I do understand that the so called “Universal Profile” is taking everyones priorty. But in reality, if some of the basic functions of Yahoo 360 (like the ability to just log in) dont work, then i’m sure you will find many many more users like myself turning to other more functional sites.
It is my feeling that Yahoo should at least fix some of the basic issues of 360, then perhaps you would find that there will be alot less dissatisifed Yahoo users. Can you please let us know what the fate of 360 is going to be, and if there is any plans to fix the problems there. I would appriciate your thoughts and comments on this matter. Thank you and have a great weekend.

I agree with the previous comments. seems like a while back when you did away with yahoo photos and merged with flicker is when the problems started. first nobody could get their photos to work, then when it did work it stopped updating. then it quit all together. then came the problems with leaving comments not working, groups stopped working, rss feeds had issues and blogs were impossible to either leave or comment on. ive even had my page deleted 2 or 3 times and a few days later it was up and running again minus all my page counts and some missing blogs. now half the time when i try to get on 360 it takes forever to load and when it does manage to load half the time you cant even manage to log on. why should i stick around and try and deal with something thats broken, and when i send messages to tech support all i get is the same old letter about how there not going to fix anything because of the new profile system. and to top it off, when you go to the yahoo 360 news page its only updated once every 6 months! last update was october. im so impressed with the service that i basically deleted everything off my page and now i spend my time on myspace and facebook. at least there everything works. and believe me when i tell you alot of yahoo users agree with me.

A lot of Y360 users are going through the same problems as C.I. Its useless to consistently ask the same questions over and over about the fate of Y360, its quite apparent that the service will finally be disabled or crippled beyond repair.

I just want to know, when a blogging feature will show up on the new profile. I’m exhausted trying to post a blog under this conditions.

I’m also tired of going into chat and fighting bots and spam. I’m furious that people try to add me to their messenger every time I post a comment here or whenever I go into MyBlogLog. Social interaction aside…no one should be subjected to constant pestering to the point of blocking the individual.

Thanks for the rant, sorry the subject matter was not in line with the YAnswers changes. I like using YAnswers…doesn’t matter to me which profile Yahoo chooses to use for me. Its still me….

Lacie~.

Hi, I have a problem.. I want anyone on messenger to see my updates (with is’s updates) . I checked to the “manage updates” and the option with “share”… enabled (checked) and the list I want to share is set to anyone. Updates you are sharing box also showing the updates. I checked in profiles.yahoo.com the updates is showing up.
But in other messengers, at my profile/card it is not shown anything. Strange… looks not broadcast to messegers (myID), but others ID it showing up their updates. What should I do? Thank you.

Help! I know this really doesn’t belong here but have no idea where else to go…

I have a Flickr account…and had a Yahoo log-in associated with it, with an old email. I no longer remember my Yahoo sign in name and when I tried to have it sent to me it was sent to my old email address…an email account with a provider who no longer exists. The only way I can see to contact anyone at Yahoo, to try to straighten this out is by logging it…which, of course, I can’t do!

Does anyone have any way to get in touch with someone at Yahoo…by email, phone or passenger pigeon….who might be able to help me reactivate my account?

Thanks

OMG… why do you continue to chnage things and feel that all are accepting? I can no longer add a “statement’ near my Avatar which is visable to anyone. I liked that I can make a general statement and yet have my connections see my personal info. when someone finally learns something and gets use to it… Yahoo feels the need to scramble and screw with their members.

The transferred blog looks like garbage now. All images are minimized to the point that they do not make any sense anymore, embedded music does not show anymore, just an empty spot, comments are all anonymous now…Yahoobutchered it. I am sure not all entrances got imported and only a few recent posts are showing at the right side..everything is just butchered. It also does not accept images anymore, only links to the image stored somewhere else. Saving space.
Yahoo ruined a nice layout of Yahoo 360 and came out with this..just to shut upYahoo 360 users.
But this Yahoo profile sure is the lousy replacement.
Do they care? Of course not. They care only about profit, laughing at us all the way to the bank.

Now people are trying to invite their friends here from Yahoo 360, but it will not work, because this profile is garbage, the blogs do not accept the images, only links, so what is the point of it now? The transferred music does not work, either, and Yahoo 360 had a very simple layout where you could see everything at one glance, blog with a thumbnail, friends, guest book..not so here, and yahoo not accepting images sure makes me angry.
Yahoo turned into garbage…

Hi Melissa,
Help help help … a few days ago, I trusted a yahoo email & clicked to transfer my 360 to my yahoo profile (big mistake).
After that (and I think it did the transfer), I ended up with a blank browser page that said “You do not have access to this”.
Since then, I have not been able to even view profiles, not mine or anyone else’s. All I get is the same message (when I try to view any profiles).
I have written to the profile help people, but all I got is the exact same message (twice already), which seems to be a ready template telling me they are working on the problem.
Does it really need that many days to correct this matter?

My Yahoo ID is the prefix of my email address, which I assume you have access to, although it is not published here publicly.
Thanks a million.

Cool
