Using the Guestbook

On each of your profiles you may have noticed the “Guestbook” feature. The Guestbook allows your connections (or, if you wish, anyone who comes across your profile) to leave you a message, much like a virtual white-board or answering machine.

For those of you who have tinkered with the Guestbook feature you might have noticed that it supports some HTML-this means that for those of you wishing to share links with your friends, this might be a great way to post your favorite website, page, or site until the “Cool Links” functionality returns to profiles.

To do this, just enter some basic HTML code for links in your Guestbook. You’ll be using the “a href” tag (you can see it in the screenshot below, and in the visible code below)-just substitute in your URL where the http://www.yprofileblog.com is, and then add in the appropriate description text after the carrot (that’s the >) where it says “Profiles News Blog”.

<a href=”http://www.yprofileblog.com”>Profiles News Blog</a>

http://www.yprofileblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/URL.jpg
Once you hit “Post Comment” the code will show up as an active link, ready for your connections to click and view!

http://www.yprofileblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/Submittedlink.jpg

For those of you wishing to share your Guestbook with anyone who happens across your profile, you can easily do this by going to the Settings page and then selecting “Anyone” from the drop down by Guestbook. To restrict the Guestbook to your connections only, just change this to “My Connections,” and click “Save” at the bottom of the page.

http://www.yprofileblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/Guestbookpermissions.jpg
Hope this helps and have fun using your new Guestbook!

Because I know my usual ‘Can we at least have the option for Alies profiles back and get rid of the feature creep’ seems to be ignored by the designers, I think i’ll try to effect even some small positive change if only for the sake of saying “i tried”.

Is there any way to shut this feature off if, say, we don’t want what people we know being broadcast to everyone or don’t want a bunch of useless comments from people known or not or for any other of the myriad reasons we would have for not wanting this? I know some other features can’t be shut off or are just ‘on or off’ but does this one at least have an off button?

Yes, under the drop down menu you can set it to be viewable to “Me Only”– though it will show when you view your own profile, it won’t be visible to anyone else– connection or otherwise– when they come across your profile.

Why is this site so full of “flame wars” and what inspires people to cause provokation to others who may be vulnerable or hurting inside, just for sport? Can’t we all just get along???

If people who are playing this game are having fun, will the game be even more fun when the “favors” are returned to them by the unknown?

I have seen the same thing. I have even used the “report abuse” link on the new profiles but profiles containing links to the same porn and other adult sites keep getting created over and over again.

Here is one:

http://profiles.yahoo.com/teennep167

Does Yahoo review spam in profiles manually?

Once you have identified a site as spam, it would make sense to not allow another link to the porn site to be created in the guestbook (or elsewhere) again.

Opendns.com and Phishtank.com have services that let you filter out categories of sites. There are numerous of lists of spam sites. Though, with the amount of spam Yahoo receives it would be easy to accumulate a list of URLs to spam sites.

I have been through all these profiles blogs & it seems that no one has asked the obvious question, at least directly that is & I would be grateful for an answer though I do not expect I will get one given Yahoo’s inept record at customer relations. The question is this Why did you launch a product that was not ready, why replace a functional system with a poorly designed beta product that obviously is so full of bugs it is virtually unusable.

Surely you could have tried the product out on focus groups first then a limited beta launch to iron out the bugs before having a proper smoother launch. At the moment at least it appears so to me you rushed into use these products before they were ready in reaction to MSN/Live & Googles new products. Had you launched a product that was ready with prior warning to your users the massive bad feeling that has created (one anti profile petition has 12.6 million signatures!”

My other point is this why keep adding features to the new profile product when you still have not even acheived functionality yet, I suggest you get the product working first before you start adding extra features.

They somehow feel that the old profile system has some flaw to it, or that they won’t have any benefits from actually giving us back a system that we liked and that lacked all the bloat. We won’t be getting it back any time soon sadly, not until someone else buys Yahoo and decides to listen to Yahoos customers.

Again not blaming Melissa for this but I have a feeling Jerry and a few of his pals have it in their head that this is a good move and won’t be convinced otherwise.

The old and much better profiles are gone forever, chat on yahoo is dying a slow and painful death, customers are being driven away from yahoo due to poor customer service. We are witnessing a historic event….the demise of the great yahoo of yesterday and the birth of an inferior social network knockoff.

I agree with you. It is way too complicated to setup and customize for a new member, especially while they’re joining a Yahoo group for the first time. I spent day>s< figuring out how to set mine up.

We have already lost (and will continue to lose) people who wanted to join Yahoo groups, but because they have found it too complicated, they gave up and did not join. Once they have this bad experience, I doubt if you could talk them into trying again.

That’s why I made a suggestion on the Suggestion Board about this.

I really like this idea. The address book is very versatile. Please take note of 2 suggestions. If you implement these, I think I will start using this Yahoo! profile feature.

1) My connections should be visible to only the people I allow. I will chose which connection(s) see which connections(s).

2) In the addressbook, there is a option to click the messenger ID or phone no. and the Yahoo! messenger opens up. Similaryly an option should be there to click on the email addresses and our default Mail program should open up!
I really like your addressbook! It’s very versatile and good!!!!!

Oh Joy! Got my first Connect request — FROM AN OBVIOUS BOT! Fortunately I’m savvy enough to recognize a bot ID when I see one, so there was no need view the “person’s” Profile — WHICH I COULDN’T, ANYWAY, because we aren’t Connected!

‘Way to go, Yahoo. So now in addition to the Conference Invites and spam IMs on Messenger, I can look forward to bot harassment via email.

Some XMPP servers have implemented CAPTCHA for the first time someone tries to contact you through instant messaging ( see
http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0158.html ). Yahoo only uses CAPTCHA when entering a chat room. After that, a bot in a chat room can automatically message anyone. With CAPTCHA on first contact, they would not be able to and the bots infecting Yahoo chat rooms would no longer be able to automatically instant message everyone.

Besides the image CAPTCHA Yahoo uses, there’s also text CAPTCHA where the sender is challenged with a question that is easy for a human to answer.

Yahoo Messenger does not have a “report as spam” button on conference invites.

I think you have taken a program which was really simple and turned it into mass confusion. Before update when my messenger was off it did not pop up on the screen every time someone logged in but now it does it all the time. It is not as easy to IM someone as it was before…plus they can view your profile with just a click of a button…plus blogs made that you may not even know about….how about a little privacy and and lets not show so much info in messenger….That is what we have our profiles for. I think this was put together with paper and paste…and the user was never taken into consideration. Also I would like to know what you consider spam…Is this someone who is trying to swindle money from you…and what is the best way to get these people prosecuted? Are these complaints “report abuse” actually ever addressed by Yahoo and if so what action is being taken to prevent that person from continuing to abuse the system.
Waiting for answers…..Sincerely
Samatha

Samantha,
The concerns you’re raising are not issues with profiles, but are issues with Messenger. You can actually disable the pop-up notifications within Messenger if you’d like. If you’re using 9.0, go to Messenger> Preferences> Alerts & Sounds > Alert me when..

and adjust your settings to what you’d like.

Spam can be anyone who contacts you who is unsolicited. All report abuse complaints are addressed.

Without her knowing it someone else could read it, like possibly a user posting bad comments about another user on their profile. Now I don’t know you are supposed to be the expert you probably have an option to disable the guestbook and could explain to her how that’s what you need to do Melissa. Melissa,

Well this is interesting, an admission that theer are issues with messenger. Well THAT is new and exciting. At least it is an acknowledgement..

That said, do you actually believe what you are saying? I mean seriously? All spam abuse cmplaints are addressed? Addressed how? Please, I resent being treated like a moron. It is bad enough that you continue to defend the indefensible. But you now tell such gross lies that no one reading this blog could possibly be dumb enough to believe you? And this is supposed to make you sound credible? All you do is alienate more and more folks with such absolute nonesense.

So a challenge. Convince us that you address all abuse complaints. If you do, it won’t be hard to explain that process. It might even make a good blog topic. So, can you do it? Well, can you? I dare you! Explain yourself. If you do it well you will satisfy a lot of people. If you do it poorly but at least make an attempt, we can at least say you tried to answer the question. But my guess is that this will be greeted with the silence which will simply prove that you are nothing but a liar and nothing more then a corporate shill.

Hey now, you’re being anti-”social”. How do you expect yahoo’s master plan to become a great place to be stalked or meet every nutcase, pervert or crook on the internet to suck-seed (pronounced the same as “succeed”, but seems more appropriate) if nobody allows them to “connect” to them? And as a special bonus, they’ll throw in all the spam you want for free.
My apologies Mal_igned for using your post to do some sarcastic venting. I figured that since you probably won’t get an “official” yahoo non-answer to your question, that I would post something.

But Mal, that’s how Facebook does it. And surely their userbase can only be attracted by copying their features and functionality…

It would seem simplicity itself to place an expiration date on the invite so that while the invite is active (say for anywhere from 7-30 days, and the inviter would like), the invitee can see the person’s profile as if they were a connection, but after the expiration date, no longer be able to.

I thought of that just sitting here just now in two seconds. Yahoo, however, seems to be taking a bit longer…

Hi Melissa,

You said the cool links/homepage feature was going to be added back to the new profiles. Any idea on the timetable on that and if it will pull it from my old profile?

Also a suggestion on the Guestbooks, make it so you can choose who can POST on your Guestbook, not just view. Set it to anyone as a default but the user can adjust it to “my connections only” or “only me” if it starts getting spammed/abused.

Also, make every module in the profile movable to allow greater customization/freedom of expression, you can’t move the top one and one or two others right now I think.

Thanks for your help!

Seems that I forgot that what I see when I look at my profile may not be what others may see.

It would be useful if we could click on something that would show us “what anyone will see” or “what connections will see” while we’re setting up or fine tuning these profiles. This can also eliminate some nasty surprises if some setting is not working the way they thought it would. Let’s face it, these new profiles and all the various settings/options may be confusing, to say the least, until we get used to them.

Why don’t you all just boycott Yahoo? Spread the word to all friends, connections, bots and creeps on the net: Boycott Yahoo! Don’t log on. Delete your Messenger. Delete your account if that’s what it takes.
Some guy just got over a million users to *not* sign on to Facebook, as a protest against their management and it’s lack of attention to it’s users.

Yahoo thinks it’s untouchable. Thus it doesn’t give a damn about what the users say here or anywhere else. The only thing they’ll respect is a massive drop-out of users.

Yahoo management is about as thick-headed as they come, but a major cross-web black out might teach them something you’d expect them to have learned years ago: Without users there is no Yahoo.

Anyway ….. have someone click on your profile and have them check to see if the guestbook is there. If it is, you probably have something set wrong. If it’s not there, I’d suggest sending in a bug report.

Here is a plan, we know you won’t sell to microsoft. How about just give your company to an 8 year old, they could probably do a better job than you.

For those of you who want their status on their page. The new profiles do not allow the link to send IM but does allow the for you to display your status using Guestbook. You can look at my profile at http://profiles.yahoo.com/chtwright. You will see my status in my Guestbook and the code for it beside my pic. I couldn’t get the whole code cause the space wouldn’t allow for it if you want it exactly like mine you can send me email and I’ll try to get it to you as soon as possible. Make sure your Guestbook is viewable to anyone for others to be able to see your online status.

I think Yahoo! should get clear glass bathroom stall doors for all of their employees and tell Melissa it’s part of their plan to be more “Open and Social.” And I’d love to see what her reaction would be when she says she wants the old doors back and they tell her that they have no plans on bringing back the old doors they were outdated but they will be looking at incorporating a feature of the old doors, they are looking into bringing the door locks back. LOL

I am finding this whole fiasco of an unannounced forced roll-out of a defective beta ’social system’ and yahoo’s arrogant and condescending lack of response amazing. Amazing in how it just gets worse. I note now the moderators of this blog have stopped even pretending to care 90% of the posters are angry and hate this new thing, and just babble along about some new ‘improvement’ they made ‘just for us’. Melissa has even stopped responding to the few posts that seem approving of this garbage of a beta replacement. Although I cancelled my Yahoo accounts weeks ago over this, it’s like a car wreck on the side of the road, I can’t stop looking at it lol.

I was being a smart ass when I first suggested that anyone that didn’t like this new system should just turn it off. I opologize to everyone. At that time, I didn’t realize I couldn’t even figure out how I kept inviting my ownself to socialize and refusing to accept the offer from my own profile???? WHAT?? How can I refuse to accept an invite from my own self? I can’t even word the complaint so it can be repaired. Help! Anyone! According to YAHOO I don’t exist but, I’m still somewhere….HELP! It’s like a Steven King novel! (No Offense, Mr. King) Someone just end this! Melissa?? Have you been removed??? Who’s there??

Hello Melissa:
I hope Matt got fired (finally!), but althoug you seem to be a nice female, you are doing WORST! (than him…)

All Yahoo360° staff is obviously a BETA staff…taking us as GuineaPigs for stupid ideas…and earning a salary: that, in México (& the rest of this World, if not the entyre Galaxy) is called CORRUPTION & IMPUNITY.

Maybe you are under the competition salary, to eradicate Yahho completly from the Planet. Take a basic cousse with Google…it’s almost TWO years Yahoo is disrespecting us, erasing OUR comments, changing our profiles, adding stupid & dangerous stuff…LEAVE YAHOO ALONE !!!

I don;t know if I can get any help in here or not but ever since I joined unknowingly a yahoo group my email has been hacked by YAHOO.
Example I get an email from someone I know and in that email they have also sent it to someone I DO NOT KNOW,so now I have this connect to invite others thing going on EVERY time I go to check my emails. There must be thousands of names in my contact list that are INVISABLE to me. My personal address book only shows those I myself have added. I have called yahoo and they refused to connect me to anyone who could help me. I am ready to get rid of yahoo all together.

Anyone ever tried to type their own name/email address into yahoo search n come up with zero? makes me wonder if this is really about social networking or just the first steps to control the angry masses…
Why do you need to write down someones home address in your err
“connections” anyway..
Maybe Osama Bin Laden @ 666 i hate america street could come in handy to the electronic eyes n ears .. but why would i want to potentially jepardize the privacy/security of my friends (name+ home address = credit card fraudsters prep work?) in the scenario my email account was ever cracked/zombified/whateva..just seems to me as an underhanded way of monitorring the whole worlds behaviour/data mining/social engineering… to what end??? You tell me

Just want to say how hellbent yahoo is on taking away features. I posted on here the way to post your online presence indicator on your profile using guestbook. It didn’t allow for the link but it did show the OPL for online or offline. Well, I guess I shouldn’t have posted it on here because I checked my profile today and apparently they’ve put a stop to that. I don’t see the big deal I guess anyways seeing how nobody can search my profile anyway unless they know my name and in that case they are probably already in my messenger list. But that does prove to me that Yahoo! is reading all of these comments we are posting but could care less to do anything about it, they want even respond to us. And it pisses me off because I’m a paid customer. I paid for minutes on messenger so I can easily take telephone calls while on messenger because I have dialup and I used to have to disconnect from the internet, take a call, then get back on. Well, now I hardly even use messenger anymore because it’s pointless, if you are like me you’ve got alot of friends on your list, but none of them get online anymore. They’ve all went to myspace or somewhere else, and you can’t even log into chat now to get friends to add to your list because the bots have taken it over. And now you can’t even search members to add some to the list. It’s all pointless, I’m not gonna just guess names in their stupid new search now to find friends that live lord knows how far away from me. What’s the point. I used to spend 90 percent of my time on yahoo, because I’d be checking my mail, chatting, searching profiles, or playing yahoo games, or whatever, now about 2 percent, my messenger isn’t even up and running now and I used to always have that on when I first booted up my computer. It’s pointless now. The only thing I use yahoo for now is mainly email. Yahoo could have just focused on 360 before screwing with the regular profiles, fix one thing before you screwup another. Hell that’s what 360 is supposed to be used for, social networking. You see it didn’t work what makes you think the yahoo profiles is going to work(talking to you people at Yahoo!). And the reason is not because 360 sucked or was stupid. It’s because you go on there, you search for profiles, and can’t even search by last log-in. You search through pages and pages of profiles that users no longer check or update. You can’t refine your search very well either. Nobody is going to waste their time searching through a bunch of profiles that are outdated. So they stop using the service as well since it is so unusable, and then there goes another profile to the list of pages users will scroll through to find for nothing.

And what do you do with the new profiles, first thing, take away our advanced search. Well, that’s all they needed to do to kill Yahoo!. Real simple, easy and effective. It won’t be that easy to revive Yahoo! because now if they do bring back and add search options, and fix there chat, they are going to have to get the word out to all of the yahoo users that have done move elsewhere because of Yahoo!s stupid thinking.
There is only a few things yahoo can do to fix this problem if they want more users.

1. Bring back a member search, just the way it was, with members online and all of that, and of coarse, make it to where the person decides where their profile is to be searchable or not. And bring back the OPI send IM link to the regular profiles.

2. Add a “last log-in” search option to your 360 profiles. Nobody like I said wants to waste time searching for unused profiles. You do that and it will keep users using their 360. Another thing too, take them to their profile after they sign in instead of the getting started page or whatever page that is that they also see before they sign in. Little things like that irritate people. Keep your open and social concept geared towards 360, as to leave the option open to those who don’t want the whole social networking thing, Instead of forcing it upon people with the new profiles.

3. Chat, we know you spent the time and effort in CAPTCHA, even though it didn’t work we did appreciate the effort. However, it didn’t work, what happened was after they all got kicked out, someone then had to log them back in, and they could no long jump rooms. So the bots didn’t get past CAPTCHA the humans still logged them in. So here is the fix…

Set it up, so that if a user gets ignored by more than 4 or 5 other users, not from any intervention from you by review or anything else, they automatically get kicked from the room and cannot return to the same room within a 24 hour period. Once you do that, that means that the spammer would have to actually sit at his or her computer all day, and would defeat the purpose in even having a bot, because that’s what the bot is for, to let it do all the spamming for you while you are off doing whatever. Everytime the human logs them in they’d shortly get logged back out. And you could also have it set up so that when they get kicked a set amount of times, they get banned from the server.

Now, what that does is free up the room for real people to join, and eliminates all the clutter in the message window and also stops alot of the pms when you first log in to chat that you get from alot of bots. So then you will have more and more real users joining chat because of that. More of an audience to view the ads on your chat screen, people will pay you to put their ads up then, nobody is going to pay you to put up an ad in your chat rooms just for a bunch of bots to see, which is why we all see the ad for Yahoo! Personals if we were to log into chat.

Yahoo!,
If you act quickly and follow those steps you will have users returning your site to use your services. The longer and longer you hold off the worse it will be, you are constantly loosing users. You need to listen to us because we are the ones who knows what is best. We are the ones that use your services so unlike you we aren’t ignorant to the facts. You could still leave the new profiles just like they are if you want to since you all are so damn proud of them, just do what I mentioned to bring the search back and fix the chat. Please listen to us for cryin’ out loud already. I mean damn, have you all thought about being politicians, you all at Yahoo! would make great ones, you keep talking about how things are going to get better, you tell us that you know what is best for us, and you completely ignore our voice.

You all are going to love this who want to be able to search profiles again.
Don’t wait on Yahoo! to give you your search options back. Just do a google domain search. Go to google.com and type this into the search box.
“town gender site:profiles.yahoo.com”
example
“greensboro female site:profiles.yahoo.com”
check it out it works

Melissa I think that you are doing the best that you can. Yahoo is kind of following in the footsteps of MSN. MSN has closed their groups and sent most of the groups to Multiply, They have also added facebook, linkedin and somewhere else as a combo thing (which I cant stand lol) Looks like everyone is going to have to do a lot of adjusting. I use my puter to stay in touch with everyone and gripe as we may we still need it . Have a GREAT weekend

Hi, I tried to add some HTML to a post in my Guestbook. I noticed it didn’t work. It just underlined the words, but the link did not link. So I tried to enter the exact example you gave above:

Profiles News Blog

This didn’t work either. All that happened was ‘Profiles News Blog’ got underlined, but it wasn’t linking. Something is wrong here.

Hey, try it again, I haven’t had any trouble out of it. One thing I don’t like however is that pics you put in the guestbook do not show up until you sign the guestbook. I have the OPI on mine, but you have to leave a comment on the guestbook in order to see it. Also though I’ve added the link to my old profile so a user can also see it by clicking the link to my old one. All of our old profiles can be found http://manage.members.yahoo.com/your_id. Don’t get me wrong I’m just as pissed as everyone else about the new profiles and them taking away member search and doing nothing to fix chat. Speaking of chat, you can add your own personal chat room to your new profiles though. Go to meebo.com and create a chat room, you don’t even have to sign in or anything at meebo to do this, just create a chat room, get the code and put the code into your guestbook. Works great, you might have to adjust the width setting in the code for it to work if I’m remembering right, you can play around with it though till you get it right. Hope this helped some. I’m also assuming if you can do that you can put music widgets on your page too which would be cool. I’ll play around with it some till I figure out how and write back on here, cause I know that nobody from Yahoo! will let you know anything useful.

Just want to let everyone that doesn’t know you can add flash widgets to your guestbook. I put a meebo chat room on mine the other day it worked fine. Since I’ve taken that off because there is never going to be enough people viewing my page at one time to get a chat started though. I was just playing around with the guestbook to see what all I could do with it. I also had a podcast widget on there. Now I have a music widget on there that automatically loads when my profile loads. My profile is http://profiles.yahoo.com/chtwright if anyone wants to see. From there you will see where to get the widget as well, hoped that helped anyone that was interested in what they can do with there page, I think pretty much anything you can put on myspace you can put in your guestbook on yahoo.

Can you not see how absurd it is that you can have HTML in your guestbook and not elsewhere on your profile?

Even if you do put HTML in your guestbook it means anyone else who comes along and posts messages is going to shift it down the page.

Talking of which why on earth can you not choose who can write to your guestbook as well as read it?

you didn’t understand a thing graham wrote. he made a perfectly good point.

the guestbook is the only place we can put html

for example, if i want to put a mp3 widget on mine which i did which plays songs when someone views my profile.

now, I might want to have that on my profile but not allow other people to put crap like that on there, like if someone adds another one of those to mine, that would be all screwed up, two players trying to play music at the same time

also, having link or something that you want to post, but others then post on your page so it gets moved down,

you should be able to have the ability to post stuff on your profile and not have others if you don’t want to

Thanks for your comments on the Guestbook– your feedback concerning privacy and options (allowing for better controls of who can see what, and who’s allowed to comment) is fantastic. I’ll be sure to pass it along, and I appreciate your continued patience and commenting here.
