Managing your updates
We know that each of you have different needs in respect to what information you want to share with others, and what you’d like to keep private. With the recent introduction of updates within profiles, many of you had questions about how to change who-sees-what-information, and, the easiest way to make some things public, while still managing to keep other things private.
This week the profiles team pushed out another new update allowing for better customization and control of your information while you’re on the Yahoo! network.
From the newly updated “updates” page, you can select which services on the Yahoo! network broadcast your updates to your connections, and which do not.
Over the next coming months, you’ll see even more sources for updates and more places to display your updates across the network. With each new addition, you’ll be able to customize and modify your preferences from this page.
To get started, point your browser to: http://profiles.yahoo.com/settings/updates
Be sure you’ve clicked on “Manage My Updates” (1)
Then, from the drop-down menus (2) select who you’d like to view your updates-you can choose from “Anyone,” “My Connections,” or “No One.”
Click “Save” to apply your changes. (3)

You can also manage your updates on an individual level, using the “Updates you are sharing” window to the right. (4)
This window shows all of your recent changes to your profile, your Buzz Activity, as well as any other network activity that you choose to broadcast.
Just click on the “x” next to each of the updates to hide that particular notification. (5) This change will only apply to that specific update, as opposed to the drop-down option, which changes your preferences for all updates of that type.
Additionally, whenever you change your settings on an update, you can see your latest changes in the box below your settings in the “Updates you are sharing” box. (6)
Of course, if you don’t want to share any updates with anyone, you can de-select the “Share My Updates” box in the top left side to prevent any updates from posting to your profile or anywhere else on the Yahoo! network.

That’s it. I’ll keep you posted of new features and additions to the Yahoo! Network as they come along, including integration with other Yahoo! services. Until then, happy updating!

When yahoo first changed the profiles, there were four tabs under settings. Now there are only three…what was the fourth one? I can’t remember.

We want a reliable place to blog and have haven’t had that on Yahoo since you decided to close 360.
November 22nd, 2008 at 8:55 am
It would be great to have more levels of connections (work, family, friends).

Matt,
Great suggestion– I’ll pass it along.

On a positive note, thanks for the updates! We look forward to Yahoo giving us what we need to communicate and blog. Keep up the good work!

More Featuritis…. WOW…… yet 90% of the profiles are still blank.
Way to go Yahoo
November 24th, 2008 at 1:14 am
I believe all profiles should have to be filled out fully even if it not truely correct, so at least you know who u r talking to. there should only be a small amount blank like maybe 5%
November 22nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm
I’m still patiently waiting for my online smiley to return. Any word on if they are even looking into that feature?
November 24th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your patience. Yep, they are working on it, but the team is also actively working on ironing out some of the other functional kinks you all have mentioned here, to make sure that everyone across the board has the same experience.
I’ll be sure to let you know when it’s brought back.
-Melissa
November 24th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
I understand about working out the kinks. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I’m really happy that they are bring that back. I so miss it.
Take Care

hope changes r gonna come /:)

I am still wondering….is this new profile system supposed to be easier???? This is so stupid. Profiles should be easy to set up and maintain. I seriously doubt anyone really wants to go through several steps to update and even make a profile and I think that is why so many people still have blank profiles. Also, like Nancy, I am waiting for the status smilies to appear. Please make that happen soon. Thank you
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:24 am
Sshhh! Dont ask for a feature that is wanted and useful. yahoo won’t implement it.
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:41 am
You have a bus, it’s comfortable, reliable, and gets the job done. Then you replace it with a newer, poorly designed bus. The new one has no AC, wooden seats, the windows won’t roll down, and it doesn’t run half the time. The customers are all complaining that they want the older, better bus back, but you say, “no, this one’s newer and you’re stuck with it whether you like it or not, now leave me alone while I try to make it work.”
December 16th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
hmmmm, sounds like Vista………
November 23rd, 2008 at 5:25 pm
The last profile was easy, fast and eficient! This new profile is SOOOO COMPLICATED and worthless. It is almost IMPOSSIBLE to figure this thing out! I’m quite SURE that is the reason why most profiles are EMPTY !!! I liked the other profile much better! It was easy to use and fast and sufficient! Seriously, I can’t understand WHY you guys would want to change it!? Also, the chat rooms are all complicated as well. I can’t even talk on my mic in any of the yahoo chat rooms now! This is all very sad indeed!
November 24th, 2008 at 9:03 am
Rachel,
Profile information was migrated over in the switch. If profiles were empty prior to the switch, they’re still empty– it’s not a massive upheaval. The only major change would be if a user had an alias profile filled out but not their primary profile filled out, and they’ve yet to visit their new profile and “claim” their old information.
As far as your issues go with chat, be sure to log that as a bug with customer care– there haven’t been any changes to chat lately that should have affected that, so please do report that.
In regards to why the changes were made, as I’ve mentioned before, it’s part of a larger plan for Yahoo! to be more “Open and Social” and is the first step towards many changes. Ryan, over on the mail blog has a great clip of Jerry talking about the changes coming for Yahoo! mail (and how it plays into this “Open Social” strategy).
-Melissa
November 25th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Didn’t Jerry step down or get fired or something? Melissa this ‘open and social’ thing feels more like grasping at straws, and considering how bad the new profile system is and how poorly it was executed I really do worry that this mail ‘upgrade’ will be the nail in yahoos coffin.
Still I have to point out that none of us understand what specifically is meant by ‘open and social’. All we see now is a poorly executed attempt to copy facebook rather than doing what had set Yahoo apart for so long. What we want to know specifically is why we have such a bloated and hard to use system, why there are so many glitches and bugs, why we have to give up having Alieses rather than having them as different from our ’social’ profile if we so choose and most of all why Yahoo is ignoring the massive amount of negative feedback from this forced beta.
I’m not trying to Harass you Melissa or to be difficult. The absolute last thing in the world I want to see is Yahoo going under. But to be honest I can’t help but see it happening soon when the complaints of the masses are left unaddressed, when the product being put out is so confusing even after so much time and effort beign put into it and why most users are not even remotely happy with the changes yet things keep moving forward.
Please, Melissa, I know you probably understand and simply can’t do much, but I emplore you to try and make your bosses understand that this move is totally unacceptable. If things get much worse even those of us just ‘hanging on till we find something that fits’ will bail out en mass as well as will more users who don’t like the way things are going.
Mail is your last bastion of major users, the one place where thus far the people who use yahoo as a simple mail client and nothing more still reside. If you tamper with that it very well could spell the end of your company. I beg you to do everything you can, let them know that things need to go back as they were and this whole beta concept needs to be reconsidered from the ground up before its too late.
December 5th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Reconsider your move to a more “Open and Social” Yahoo. Bring back old aliases and their profiles!
December 20th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Melissa how stupid are you guys at Yahoo! When she said she can’t even use her mic in the chat rooms it’s probably because there isn’t anybody in their to chat with or can’t get into the rooms b/c they are flooded with bots.
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Why report spam on profiles if you never get rid of it?
Bots and spam have turned Yahoo profiles and chat into a wasteland.
December 12th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
rene, do you mean to say that spam comments on one’s profile cannot be removed by the user? Or that there are spammer profiles?
December 16th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
(The comment that I made did not show up; trying again.)
@RS: There are spammer profiles that are not getting removed after they are reported.
The same spam sites show up over and over again in groups, profiles and instant messages.
Often even though a specific URL is present in the spam, what is often really occurring is free advertising for the whole domain found in the URL. The URL may or may not contain an affiliate identifier.
For example, the teennep167 Yahoo profile is spam. The profile was reported over two weeks ago but is still there. It contains a link to adult sites.
You could write a program to follow the URL redirections where necessary, count how many group messages and Yahoo profiles contain a link to adultfr!endf!nder.com multiple that by the number of views for each message and profile and then send adultfr!endf!nder.com a bill for advertising on Yahoo along with a unique list of URLs so they can deduct any payments to affiliates spamming Yahoo and/or the company itself where no affiliate identifier was present.
MySpace also wraps each link and redirects to a warning page that you are leaving MySpace. They often disable dangerous links left in comments, blog entries, etc. On Yahoo, you are taken directly to the site.
It needs to cost the people and companies creating the spam money to reduce the amount of spam found on Yahoo.
November 24th, 2008 at 12:46 am
i hope you know you have just made it a thousand times easier for the hackers to target your members. my ‘aliases’ had a separate profile for a specific reason, and now you have eliminated the protection it provided. that issue aside, if i had wanted a ’social networking’ profile, i would go to myspace or facebook or whatever else is out there for the stalkers to drool over. some of us like our privacy, and you have totally eliminated it. i am VERY disappointed. no wonder the company isn’t doing well. yahoo used to be a leader, not a follower.
November 24th, 2008 at 1:24 am
yahoo used to have better chat rooms, like two to three years ago, they even had user rooms.which were always being used. but they say that the sponsors didn’t like the content of the chat rooms so yahoo removed those rooms and they have recently removed more. i think those decisions were poorly thought out. all it doing is driving people away from yahoo to other chat sites were they can chat about what they want to. hope it was worth it.
November 24th, 2008 at 5:41 am
Of course it is worth it. The folks that made the decision to change everything for the worst are already millionaires or more likely multi-millionaires and probably will be paid even more if yahoo tanks.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:06 am
I would like to know how I can use this new profile system, my computer does not like pop up’s and blockes them every time I try to use them, even after I turn off the pop up blocker, what can I do ??
November 26th, 2008 at 3:31 am
goodbye yahoo……………i’ve had many years of fun and interesting times here……………..but………………..you’ve stuffed what used to be a pleasant communication experience……………..your profiles are all tooo hard to manage now,the chat rooms…(those that are left) are full of bots and spam, the whole thing sux.
goodbye,farewell…………..it was nice knowing you…….R.I.P.
November 26th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
I am sorry but I get the impression that all this is change for the sake of change, rather than building on what you already had you scrapped an easy to use system & replaced it with somthing that is very confusing & difficult to use & removed the main aspect that attracted people namely alias profiles.
December 1st, 2008 at 9:55 am
Dave,
As I mentioned before, this is all part of a broader Yahoo! change towards a more open and social experience. It’s not “change for the sake of change”– believe me.
-Melissa
December 19th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
The issue, Melissa, is that the majority don’t want this open and social network so stop with the party line please? I am in sales and we listen to what our clients issues are and offer a solution that works for them. We don’t tell them what they will buy because we said so? This is really a strange way of doing business
December 20th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Melissa, how hard would it have been to left the member search in place, maybe gave the page a diff skin so it looked newer like your profile pages. This is stupid, you won’t even answer anyone if they ask if the member search is coming back.
November 26th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
In the old system we used to have the ability to do a directory search and get a display listing by: location, on line, with photo, gender, etc. Any chance yahoo will once again display a search for other yahoo users in our area (location) so we can explore new friendships?
December 1st, 2008 at 9:56 am
Hi Pat,
Yep, we’re definitely looking at incorporating search back in the future. In the meantime some users have been using Yahoo! Groups to find other users with shared interests and have been making connections that way.
-Melissa
December 12th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Which is really a non-solution. Groups search remains pretty dysfunctional, and inadequate. It will be some time before that gets overhauled, I’m thinking, even though the Groups Team is doing great work, and reworking Groups as a product. Best of luck, Pat.
December 20th, 2008 at 11:20 am
We don’t want to use Yahoo! Groups so stop looking at incorporating sh*t and bring us our freakin’ search back.
November 28th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Melissa, Why is Yahoo ignoring the wishes of their customers, it is clear that we do not want this new profile and that we would prefer to return to the old one
When are you going to listen?
December 1st, 2008 at 9:58 am
Emma,
We are listening, but unfortunately, at this time we do not plan on reverting back to the old profiles system. Instead, the team plans on implementing your feature requests into the new version of profiles.
To truly help shape the product and “get what you want” out of it, your best bet is to provide constructive feedback here regarding features and performance attributes so that the development and design teams can utilize your feedback and implement it in future releases.
-Melissa
December 2nd, 2008 at 6:09 am
I believe that people have been giving constructive and very clear feedback on what feature they want with “profiles”. Most want the simplicity of the “old” profiles back and the ability to add modules to them as they desire, not this forced “beta” that is way more complicated to “customize”. Why didn’t the development and design teams do an actual beta test with a limited number of users instead of forcing everybody to suffer through “de-bugging”?
December 5th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Reconsider your plan with respect to profiles and aliases. Do not force users to link aliases to “Real Profiles”
December 12th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
As I’ve posted elsewhere, an Alias Profile page (which lets the viewer know it is not their real one, but also hides their real one) would be a great feature. You could even send a message to the person requesting to view their real profile page. You don’t have to be Facebook you know…you can lead the way again if you wanted to.
November 29th, 2008 at 12:30 am
I absolutely hated it, when Yahoo changed their e-mail Format, earlier this year. Now I can’t even remember what the old Format was like. (That doesn’t necessarily mean that if they brought the old Format back, I wouldn’t prefer it, over the one I’ve now grown accustomed to.) Sometimes, though, patient perseverence pays…especially when you don’t have a choice in the matter.
December 4th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Melissa, I have tried to share my updates by following these directions and for whatever reason it’s not saving them. I was one of those whose profile was not migrated and showed as an unknown yahoo user for several weeks. Are there still issues being resolved?
December 10th, 2008 at 9:48 am
From what it seems like with all of these posts is that the main concerns and issues of the people using the program are ignored or side-stepped by the creators. I’m not trying to provide harse feedback, and see that most people are complaining. So I’m going to try something a little bit different.
To Yahoo!: Your new profile system is more complicated than it needs to be. It has made things more difficult than it was in the past and will be alienating a lot of user for this reason. Suggestion… bring simplicity back. People don’t want a program that requires 5 years of computer experience to fully understand. On a side note to that, why is updating your profile so difficult? On one of my profiles, every time I try to update something, I’m given an error message saying that I can’t update at this time and to try again later. I’ve been getting that message for over a month now. Ok, to continue with what is hopefully considered constructive feedback. What is the point of merging aliasses with the main profile? As others have said, it eliminates privacy. Personally, I’m left to assume that the merging falls under part of what is meant by Yahoo! becoming more, “Open and social”. As for the migration of the old profiles to the new ones. Why was only parts of the old profile transfered over? I know I had a lot of information on my old profile that was just lost because it was not in the part that was migrated over or it was too long to fit into the condensed space of the new profile. I realise that most people don’t say much on their profiles, but I enjoyed having a lot of space to fully express myself instead of only having 5 seconds to say what I want. What is up with the almost dozen different sections in the interests now? Do we really need a different section for favorite movies, movies I want to watch, favorite books, etc… I don’t know how others feel, but to me that seems like an insult to my intelligence along with a slap in the face. Of all the different sections currently under interests, mostly should all be in one or two sections unless you think I’m too stupid to know what “Thing I like/enjoy” or “My favorites” would mean. Then all that extra space saved from merging all the different ‘favorites’ could be utalized to create ‘actual’ different parts of interests such as… “What I’m interested in”, “What I’m looking for”, “Things I don’t like”. I know all of my ideas aren’t the best, but I think most would agree they are better suggestions and something to build off of compared to what the current profile program is. So for a brief summary of what I’ve said thus far… Make it simpler and easier to use. I don’t want to have to go to five different pages of options just to update that I passed my college finals. And please try to remember that probably 99% of the users of the program have not spent five years at MIT.
Now for something that everyone thinks there is a problem with… chat rooms. For this, I feel that no matter what you do, there will be complaints from every side. Bots and spam get through the filter getting into chat rooms more easily than some users do. A possible solution to that issue, if ten or more people in the room click the button to ignore user from the room list, that person is removed from that particular room and can’t get back in it for the rest of the day. Yes I do realize implamenting that would be difficult and that it is a double edged sword. Though it will lead to the bots and spam filling up entire rooms by themself, other people will use it to get rid of people from a room simply because they don’t like that person. Possibly if a new button was added for reporting spam this idea might work. But then we would still be left with a vast number of bot/spam profiles that never get deleted anyways. Should the user rooms be brought back? I don’t think it really matter. People are still talking about the stuff they used to in the user room. Things haven’t changed much, it’s just been made unfocused.
Lastly, I would just like to say that I know this post and all the ideas for improvement will most likely not be read or brought up to anyone that can use the ideas to make a difference. Thank you for reading this all, if you have, and have a wonderful day.
Robert

I like this . . . but I don’t want people to see what I sent to others. I want people to be able to sign to my guestbook. I think the settings should be separated (if someone wants this) The way it is now is so confusing. e.g. MySpace/Facebook lets u see only what people put into your guestbook. Thank You

I am finding this whole fiasco of an unannounced forced roll-out of a defective beta ’social system’ and yahoo’s arrogant and condescending lack of response amazing. Amazing in how it just gets worse. I note now the moderators of this blog have stopped even pretending to care 90% of the posters are angry and hate this new thing, and just babble along about some new ‘improvement’ they made ‘just for us’. Melissa has even stopped responding to the few posts that seem approving of this garbage of a beta replacement. Although I cancelled my Yahoo accounts weeks ago over this, it’s like a car wreck on the side of the road, I can’t stop looking at it lol.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 pm
I just looked at my profile and I don’t get it. My age is two years old? My last name on the account isn’t mine? Geesh! Am I some kind of a virtual person that has been created by Yahoo? Why have a profile if Yahoo changes it?

Hi ,
WE have a family orientated incontinent support group, which I am the owner of the group.
I am not to happy with the new Yahoo profile and I thought of shutting down the group, but our members wanted to continue even though the inherent risk of pedophiles that are attracted to group like ours.
So I am trying to live with the new changes but having a hard time with some members updating their profiles to group profile policy. We require full disclosure in there profile along with either openly stating why they joined group or they can use our secrete codes only our group know what they stand for.
I have one member when clicking on his profile we get the following
We’ve launched a new profile on Yahoo!. The user you are searching for either does not exist, or has chosen to keep their profile private.
But when we go to this link http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/B3U5LJJ3XSABBQUKEA424IVVUY we get full disclosure
we get his full profiel as follows”
· Jack K
· · 39
· Male
· Wyoming, Michigan 39-IDN
So why I can’t see Jack profile when click on his link I get the above message but when I go to http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/B3U5LJJ3XSABBQUKEA424IVVUY I can see his profile ?
I have others that have the same problem.
Another Example I have father and son membership both with their own membership
the father profile is OK
· Todd R
·
o 42
o Male
o PA 42MIN,PIC-B18IDN, B12IDN, B9IDN
“PA M 42 IN- PIC-B18IDN,B12IDN,B9IDN”
However the sons profile we get the following even though the father did the same on both profiles it will not display the update
· Todd
·
o Ma
The father emailed me what he sees when he looks at the profile on Jpg attachment and sure enough everything is there. The father said he used the same procedure to update his son profile but it did not work.
The present members in the group have been approved with old profile so I am not that concern with them, because I have saved their profiles but it is new applicants for membership that I had to REJECT their application because either they refused to update their application or because they could not update
So how do I correct this problem for it is very important to keep out pedophiles, because they will never want to make full disclosure nor put in false information that will incriminate themselves.
I can not enforce this policy if some members are not able to comply because of some problem with yahoo profiles !
Learn more about the profile on Yahoo!
Sincerely

When will the smileys light up in address book again (if someone is logged into YIM)?
January 21st, 2009 at 4:46 pm
You all are going to love this who want to be able to search profiles again.
Don’t wait on Yahoo! to give you your search options back. Just do a google domain search. Go to google.com and type this into the search box.
“town gender site:profiles.yahoo.com”
example
“greensboro female site:profiles.yahoo.com”
check it out it works

quotes removed, you can also add the state abbreviation in there too to refine your search better

I thought “Beta” meant something in testing with work being performed on all the bugs … prior to release. Must have been mistaken. Snafoo! ( you know … Yahoo! with all the “features” that don’t work) should have left it as Beta … with the option to use it or not, and the option to roll back to previous versions when features actually worked as intended. But, in their mismanagement, which has caused them to loose their market share placing them in the arena of takeover, they decided to redefine “Beta” as ” … what you get when you use our service … regardless of the fact that we don’t even know how it works” That’s one up on Bill Gates who created the “Buy it now and we’ll fix it later” marketing strategy! Way to go, Snafoo! You’re one up on the wealthiest computer malfunctioning application marketer in the world! Best watch out now …. he’ll buy you!

Why can’t I see my recent games?? I play everyday but it has stopped on Jan 16th…………..I really don’t want to lose my rating because yahoo thinks I haven’t played a rated game in 3 months

It would be nice if age would be added automatically with the change of the years

Thank you for reading this all, if you have, and have a wonderful day.

you guys are obviously bored if your typing this much on a web page about “what”? i dont understand why anybody would sit and read these little words when all the knowledge you need to know about a computer is common sense.

Hi, I have a problem..
I want anyone on messenger to see my updates (with is’s updates) . I checked to the “manage updates” and the option with “share”… enabled (checked) and the list I want to share is set to anyone. Updates you are sharing box also showing the updates. I checked in profiles.yahoo.com the updates is showing up.
But in other messengers, at my profile/card it is not shown anything. Strange… looks not broadcast to messegers (myID), but others ID it showing up their updates. What should I do?
Thank you.
